Swansea Bay businesses support the creation of a new ‘Jubilee Wood at Penllergare’

Businesses in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot are encouraged to get involved in an exciting initiative, launched to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, which will see thousands of trees planted across the Swansea Bay Area .

On Thursday 24 March, Louise Fleet, JP, HM Lord-Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, will attend a ceremony at Penllergare Valley Woods to mark the launch of a grassroots initiative developed as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique planting initiative of trees created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

In February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, several events and initiatives are planned, including the Queen’s Green Canopy.

Across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, the Lord-Lieutenant is promoting the initiative by working with numerous schools, community groups, businesses and both local authorities. While some groups have suitable land to plant trees, those who do not can now participate in the creation of a ‘Jubilee Wood at Penllergare’ as a focal point for their efforts.

Jubilee Wood at Penllergare will be established on the 260-acre heritage site managed by Penllergare Trust. The scheme will strengthen Swansea’s ‘green lung’ and be of long-term interest to the 120,000 visitors the Penllergare Trust attracts each year from across the UK. Renowned for its importance as a tourism, recreation, heritage and wildlife site, the area is managed in accordance with the Trust’s philosophy and objectives of enhancing and promoting biodiversity, history and community.

Local businesses can get involved in the project by “sponsoring” the planting of trees to create a legacy for future generations and be central to their environmental goals while playing their part in marking the Platinum Jubilee.

While the initiative is launched now, the majority of trees will be planted until the end of March 2022 and from October 2022 to March 2023 – the best time to plant most varieties. Penllergare Trust experts will determine the optimum mix of tree types to be planted and their maturity. Companies will have the opportunity to sponsor different types and sizes of trees, from small saplings to more mature trees.

By supporting the scheme, businesses will be able to upload a photo of their tree and their business name to the official UK-wide map of the growing Queen’s Green Canopy project. They will also be invited to attend future events related to the creation of the “Jubilee Wood at Penllergare”, to use the photo of their tree on their website and to indicate that they support the Project.

The Penllergare Trust has a proven track record of doing good work. He has already received the Queens Award for Voluntary Services, the Lord Mayor of Swansea’s Regeneration Award, the WCVA Environmental Award 2017 and was a finalist in the Horticulture Week National Custodian Awards 2018.

Louise Fleet, JP, HM Lord-Lieutenant of West Glamorgan, said:

We are very excited about this initiative which will allow businesses to both help celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and play an important role in The Queen’s Green Canopy, create an important legacy and improve the environment across the UK. Penllergare Trust is a fantastic partner to work with on this program.

Lee Turner, director of Penllergare Trust, added:

We are thrilled to be part of this engaging program which will create a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy. We look forward to working with businesses of all sizes to help ensure they feel part of the creation of ‘Jubilee Wood at Penllergare’ and to ensure that something special is created that will stand up to the test of time.
