Southeast Asian Universities Win at Tencent Game Creation Challenge

Singapore and Indonesia teams perform strong at Green Game Jam for Youth

SINGAPORE, November 16, 2021 / PRNewswire / – South East Asia (SEA) performed strongly in a global online competition hosted by Tencent, via TiMi Studio Group (TiMi) and Tencent Games Institute.

Out of 11 winning teams, student teams from Indonesia and Singapore walked away with a Bronze Award and a Honorary Award respectively. Overall, “Green Game Jam for Youth” received submissions from over 200 students and varsity teams around the world.

As an important contribution to the Playing for the Planet Alliance (P4P) global effort, supported by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Green Game Jam for Youth challenge asked participating teams to submit games they had developed., with elements focused on the environment.

Representative of the Teknologi Bandung Institute (ITB), the BlueCat team of Indonesia created a mobile game named “Fishing at the clogged sink” which focuses on raise awareness of the importance of reducing waste while promoting recycling.

“We hope to further educate communities on ocean conservation awareness and waste reduction. This competition has allowed us to cultivate our skills for a good cause and has been a great learning experience for us as a visual communication design students in the game design field, ”said Nasrullah, team leader for the BlueCat team.

Team Traveler, an individual participant of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore created a game that aims to inspire and raise awareness of pressing issues related to climate change. The game is aimed at young people today to encourage them to take action. “I decided to use virtual reality (VR) technology for my original game, Traveler VR, to transport players to virtual worlds. In these immersive worlds, they can travel to places suffering from climatic disasters and witness to the effects of climate change authentically, “said the lead developer Zhen Wei Lee. “I believe we all have a role to play in promoting climate awareness and encouraging climate action.”

Proposals have gone through a rigorous review process to global standards. The 11 winning teams sharea pot of 21,500 USD in total and each team member will be awarded a certificate. Bronze Award winning BlueCat team wins 1000 USD while Team Traveler brings home 500 USD for its honorary award.

In addition to the two winning teams rSEA representative, three other teams reached the final round and received tokens of appreciation and certificates of participation. This includes the Indonesian team Wolf Pack who represented Universitas Indonesia (UI) and designed a game that depicts the story of a last sacred forest in a post-apocalyptic world where players help restore the forest. Two teams of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore were also preselected for the final round. Team 200 Success has created an original game called Seastoration Tower, which aims to raise awareness about marine wildlife conservation. Another finalist, Ahkshara Sankar created Forest warrior, a game that addresses the issue of deforestation.
